Omaha trades for forward
The Omaha Lancers acquired forward Grant Besse from the Muskegon Lumberjacks on Wednesday for a third-round pick in the 2013 USHL Entry Draft. Besse is one of the top high school players in the state of Minnesota, having scored 169 points (96 goals, 73 assists) in 75 games the past three seasons for Benilde-St. Margaret in Plymouth, Minn. Besse has committed to play for Wisconsin in the 2014-15 season.

Lancers pick up 13 in USHL entry draft
Five of the 13 players selected by the Omaha Lancers in Tuesday’s USHL entry draft have already committed to play Division I hockey. Omaha’s first selection, the No. 12 overall pick, is Harvard recruit Philip Zielonka, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound forward from Point Claire, Quebec.

Mendelson hired as Lancers assistant
The Omaha Lancers announced the addition of Leigh Mendelson to their coaching staff Tuesday. Mendelson, now in his third stint with the Lancers, will serve as the team's associate head coach. He was an assistant coach on Omaha championships teams in 2001 and 2008.

Coach saw progress from team
Progress made in the final few weeks of the season removed a little of the sting from an early exit from the playoffs for the Omaha Lancers. Coach Mike Aikens is no fan of losing, but even as the Lancers lost their final three games of the season to the Waterloo Black Hawks in the USHL's Western Conference semifinals, Aikens said he could still tell things were heading in the right direction.

Lancers nab Gersich with first pick in Futures Draft
The Omaha Lancers selected five players Tuesday in the USHL's Futures Draft of players born in 1996. With the first overall selection that they won in the Futures Draft lottery, the Lancers took forward Shane Gersich from Holy Family Catholic High school in Victoria, Minn. Gersich had 30 goals and 30 assists in 21 games last season.

Lancers' season ends with loss to Waterloo
Omaha's season ended Saturday the same way it started — with a loss to the Waterloo Black Hawks. Ian McCoshen and Aaron Pearce both scored two goals, and goaltender Stephon Williams stopped 31 of Omaha's 32 shots to lead Waterloo to a 5-1 victory that gave the Black Hawks a 3-1 series victory in the USHL Western Conference semifinals.

Three games, three times the final score ended up 4-2. Unfortunately for Omaha, in two of those USHL Western Conference playoff games against Waterloo, the Lancers have been the team that posted the deuce.

Loss puts Lancers on thin ice
Waterloo gave up a goal to the Omaha Lancers 21 seconds into their United States Hockey League playoff game Friday night but the Black Hawks score four of the next five to earn a 4-2 victory and take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-5 series before a crowd of 1,878 at Young Arena.

Venue change presents challenges for Lancers
Skating on a bigger sheet of ice the next two nights is a challenge the Omaha Lancers are prepared to face. Players and coaches agree that practicing Wednesday and Thursday at the Tranquility IcePlex was a good refresher course for the Lancers’ next two United States Hockey League playoff games against the Waterloo Black Hawks.
