Panthers sink Bluejays with final shot
Antoine Young hit a big shot Saturday to give Creighton a chance to save its winning streak. Four-point-six seconds later, Northern Iowa's Anthony James hit a bigger one to sink it. James' step-back 24-footer over Doug McDermott's outstretched arm settled through the basket as time expired to give the Panthers a 65-62 upset, snapping the No. 13 Bluejays' 11-game Missouri Valley winning streak and touching off the biggest celebration in the six-year history of the McLeod Center. »

    Offensive struggles cost CU women

The snowy conditions were outside, but Creighton's offense was stuck spinning its wheels inside D.J. Sokol Arena in a 63-55 women's basketball loss to Missouri State in front of 651 on Saturday. Creighton turned the ball over 10 times in the opening period, leading to 14 Missouri State points. The Bluejays finished the game just 22 of 62 from the field and shot 4 for 20 from 3-point range.

McDermott's story has been well-documented, about how he committed to Northern Iowa as a senior at Ames High School. McDermott was all set to play for Ben Jacobson until his father took the Creighton job, leading him to ask for and receive a release from his letter of intent in order to become a Bluejay.

Back-to-back losses to Missouri State and Wichita State put the Bluejays in a 0-3 hole to start Missouri Valley Conference play. A team that was having difficulty scoring was saddled with a four-game skid.

But a willingness to share the basketball can't totally explain the dramatic improvement Creighton's offense has made in the course of a calendar year. The Bluejays are a team that after 23 games this season has scored 326 more points, made 124 more baskets and dished out 128 more assists than at a similar point a season ago.

Bluejays zone in to hand Shockers loss

Creighton played its “Buzz23” zone for the final dozen possessions and limited Wichita State to three baskets, the last coming after Bluejay freshman Taylor Johnson had secured the 61-59 victory with a pair of free throws with seven seconds to play. Johnson also made the basket that broke a 57-57 tie with 1:28 to play as the Bluejays handed Wichita State just its second loss in 10 Valley games before 665 fans at D.J. Sokol Arena.

In a season filled with great starts, Creighton might have topped itself in Wednesday's opening burst against Illinois State. The Bluejay coupled a 10 of 11 start from the field with defensive tenacity to break out to an 18-point lead eight minutes into the game. The Redbirds never got closer than 14 points after that as No. 13 Creighton rolled to a 102-74 Missouri Valley victory before an announced crowd of 17,311 at CenturyLink Center.

Gregory Echenique and Will Artino provided Creighton with a one-two combination at center Wednesday night that put a hurting on Illinois State. They combined for 21 points and 10 rebounds in the No. 13 Bluejays' 102-74 victory at CenturyLink Center. Artino was especially impressive on the offensive end, making all three of his shots from the field and all five of his free-throw attempts to finish with 11 points, two shy of his career high.
