INDIANAPOLIS — Tyler Sash didn't see the field goal go through the uprights.
The rookie from Iowa was in the locker room, the victim of a concussion earlier in the NFC championship game. Instead of celebrating a Super Bowl berth with his Giants teammates, Sash watched on TV with about 15 people from Fox.
He'll have a better view Sunday night. When Super Bowl XLVI kicks off, Sash will be on the opening kickoff.
That reality hadn't hit him yet on Tuesday, when he entered Lucas Oil Stadium for media day. At one point, Sash grinned for apparently no reason. Why?
"I'm happy to be here, man. I'm at the Super Bowl."
It wasn't an easy year to be a rookie. The lockout barred players from organized team activities, which put newcomers behind the curve. Sash made his mark on special teams. He participates on all four units. As the fullback on the punt team, he makes checks to the protection scheme.
"You never think growing up, hey, I want to be a special teams player," Sash said. "But I'm a rookie in the Super Bowl. I'm blessed to be here."
Especially considering what happened when he returned to New York after the NFC championship game.
Sash was getting into his car when a stranger wished him congratulations. Sash was looking at the guy and opening his car door at the same time. The corner of the door smacked him under the eye, leaving a nasty shiner.
"I'm lucky it didn't poke me in the eye."
