The project: Kitchen redo involving major cosmetic improvements but no structural changes

Homeowner: Brad Schroeder

Neighborhood: Midtown Omaha

Contractor: Brad did most of work on this project. He tapped the expertise of Consolidated Kitchens for the final layout and design of the kitchen and Smith Electrical Inc.

Interior designer: The homeowner knew what he wanted and had confidence in his choices.

Cabinetry: Kemper from Consolidated Kitchens

Countertops: Cambria quartz from Consolidated Kitchens

Flooring: Existing hardwood, previously refinished.

Appliances: Nebraska

Furniture Mart Construction

Duration: About 4 months

Incentive to remodel:

Brad Schroeder had envisioned his "dream kitchen" long before he found this particular home. It was coincidental that house and dream were a "perfect match," he says. He knew what he wanted to achieve within the space, and that he could single-handedly manage most of the work.

His Goal:

To modernized his kitchen while preserving the simple and classic architectural character of his home. The black-and-white palette is timeless and can be easily updated with a change of accessories.

How He Managed:

Brad left the sink for last so he wouldn't have to be without running water for a long period of time. The refrigerator also stayed functional. Brad set up a mini kitchen in his dining room. He cooked with a microwave oven and dined out more frequently than usual.

Favorite Outcome:

A kitchen layout with improved functionality. "I love the overall look," Brad says. "I told myself this was the one-and-only kitchen remodel I was going to do, so I had to do it right. I love the appliances, especially the range," says Brad. Cooking is his passion, so he invested in a Thermador range, Jenn Air refrigerator, Asko dishwasher, and Viking wine refrigerator.

Unexpected Challenge:

"Really none, which surprised me for an older home," Brad says. "I was prepared with a contingency budget but the project went so smoothly I didn't need to tap it."
