Notes: Ex-Husker fires 70 at Amateur

Former Nebraska golfer Andrew Wyatt matched par 70 at Blue Mound Golf & Country Club in Wauwatosa, Wis., in Monday's first round of qualifying at the U.S. Amateur.

Wyatt, from Lake Forest, Ill., needs to be in the top 64 in the field of 312 after Tuesday's final round to advance to match play at Erin Hills, site of the 2017 U.S. Open. No other Husker or Midlands golfer made it into the qualifying.

Marchese qualifies for USGA seniors

Susan Marchese of Omaha is believed to be the first Nebraskan to qualify for the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur since 1979.

In her first year of eligibility as a 50-year-old, the 18-time state champion made it through the Chicago-area sectional and will be in the field for the Sept. 10-15 event at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn.

Family tourney honors 96-year-old

Dale Wolf is one of those few 96-year-olds fortunate enough to celebrate his birthday on a golf course.

While the patriarch didn't play Saturday in the 19th annual Wolf Golf Classic at the Warren Swigart par-3 course, granddaughter Kris Melvin said he rode around in a golf cart "giving pointers."

The tourney is made up of family and friends — golfers have come from California, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois and Arkansas — complete with an awards ceremony and a green jacket, Melvin said.

Fundraiser for NU scholarship

The seventh annual "The Spangler" will be held Sept. 16 at ArborLinks in Nebraska City. The four-person scramble benefits the Dick Spangler Scholarship Fund for the University of Nebraska men's golf team.

The scholarship, named for Husker coach Bill Spangler's late father, Dick, is awarded annually to a Nebraska golfer who made significant contributions to the program through his attitude, effort and team spirit.

Dick Spangler lettered on the NU golf team from 1950 to 1952, was a Nebraska Amateur champion and served on the board of the Trans-Mississippi Golf Association. He was inducted into the Nebraska Golf Hall of Fame in 1997.

The entry fee per player for "The Spangler" is $190, including golf, cart and range balls, food and beverages and cigars. For more information, contact Rich Spangler at rich@centrocigars.com.
