WASHINGTON — The National Park Service is waiving all entrance fees Tuesday, the first day of summer.

Swimmer's itch

ARNOLDS PARK, Iowa — Swimmer's itch is starting to make its presence known at Iowa's Great Lakes.

The parasitic pest can cause welts and itching, but it only lasts a few weeks and is not life-threatening, officials said.

The condition is caused by flatworms, a parasite. The flatworm eggs are transferred to water by bird droppings. The eggs hatch and are consumed by snails, from which the free swimming form of the flatworm larvae emerges. In the absence of a suitable host such as a bird, the parasite will attempt to penetrate the skin of humans, and quickly dies after that, causing an allergic reaction below the skin resulting in welts and itching.

An antihistamine along with calamine lotion can be used to treat the affected areas.

Officials said the most preventive measure is to reduce the amount of time in the water and to quickly dry off when getting out of the lake.

Manawa Park open

COUNCIL BLUFFS — Lake Manawa State Park remains open for day use, only the campground has been closed, state officials said.

“The park will remain open for day use until there is direct evidence that the levee standing between the Missouri River and the park will not hold,” said Kevin Szcodronski, chief of state parks for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. “There has been some confusion from our park visitors, and we have received a lot of calls at the park asking if the park was open.”

The DNR closed the Lake Manawa State Park campground Monday due to safety concerns that the levee holding the Missouri River back will not withstand the pressure over the expected six to eight weeks of flooding. The campground closure is expected to last through August.

Lack of Iowa hunting

DES MOINES — Iowa hunters spoke loudly about the lack of hunting opportunities when the Iowa DNR hosted open houses across the state last fall to discuss the fish and wildlife trust fund.

“Frankly, we were not at all surprised to hear that,” said Kelly Smith, private lands program coordinator for the Iowa DNR. “We are 49th in the nation in the amount of public land available for hunting. Hunting access on private land is a concern and it grows each year.”

Increasing hunter access has been a focal point within the DNR and in an effort to address that need, the Wildlife Bureau was awarded a three year, $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide funding to landowners who voluntarily sign up to install wildlife habitat on their land in exchange for allowing hunters access to that habitat.

“We are excited to see how this pilot project will be received from our landowners,” Smith said.

The program works like this: A landowner who is interested in installing wildlife habitat or improving existing habitat contacts the DNR, who will come out to visit the property and together they write a habitat plan that is submitted for consideration. If accepted, the DNR will provide an incentive payment in exchange for the landowner installing the habitat. Agreements last for a minimum of three years to a maximum of 10 years.

Hunters may have access to the portion of the property covered by the agreement, which will be treated like a public wildlife management area and open to hunting from Sept. 1 to May 31. DNR law enforcement will provide assistance and enforcement if needed.

“Some landowners expressed concerns that if they choose to participate, they would be held liable for hunting accidents or for the people who come on to their property,” Smith said. “But landowners are specifically covered by Iowa law for limited liability pertaining to incidents or accidents by hunters on their property.”

Carp-O-Rama

Join the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission for a one-day fish camp at Carp-O-Rama Saturday on the east side of Pawnee State Recreation Area near Emerald.

From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., anglers can fish for carp, as well as learn about catching, cleaning and cooking carp. That portion of the lake will be pre-baited to attract carp and increase catching opportunities. Carp caught will be served as a free lunch. Loaner fishing poles will be available, and there will be prize drawings for children.

A park entry permit is required and a fishing license is required of anglers age 16 and older.
