Warm weather season is right around the corner. Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) shares 10 simple things you can do now to help you save energy and lower your monthly energy cost.
>> Schedule a spring check-up of your cooling equipment with a licensed contractor.
> Clean or change your system's air filter monthly to save energy and help prevent system failure.
>> Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible. A one-degree increase can save up to five percent on your energy bill.
>> Keep your house warmer than normal when you are away. Consider installing a programmable thermostat.
>> Keep window shades and blinds closed to block direct sunlight.
>> Use ceiling fans so you can raise your thermostat about four degrees with no reduction in comfort.
>> Turn off ceiling fans when you leave the room. Fans cool people, not rooms, by creating a wind-chill effect.
>> Seal cracks and other openings in your home to minimize air leaks.
>> Check air registers. Make sure furniture and drapes do not restrict airflow.
>> Check your home's insulation. It's one of the fastest and most cost-effective whole-house approaches to maximize your energy dollars.
